Sports Similar To Pole Dancing

Pole dancing is a performance art that combines acrobatics and artistic dance moves performed on a vertical pole with music in the background. It has been a popular form of entertainment and fitness, especially for women, and is commonly practiced in gyms or dance studios. Pole fitness or pole dancing includes various tricks, such as climbs, spins, twists, turns, and inversions, which require a high level of skill, flexibility, precision, and strength.

Pole dancing used as an exercise has been linked hundreds of years ago to mallakhamb, which translates to "gymnast's pole" or "pole gymnastics," a traditional Indian sport that uses a wooden pole and focuses on strength, grace, endurance, dexterity, agility, suppleness of body, sense of timing, and muscle coordination. It has been revived by Balambhatta Dada Deodhar, a fitness instructor to Peshwa Bajirao II. The pole used in this sport is called the "stambha." The vertical pole is fixed on the ground and smeared with castor oil to lessen the friction between the body and the pole. The name "mallakhamb" comes from the word malla, which means "strong man or athlete," and khamba, which means "pole." It is performed with various yoga-like and gymnastic poses while suspended on a rope or on a pole. There are also different types of mallakhamb such as the pole mallakhamb, the hanging mallakhamb, the rope or cane mallakhamb, and the revolving bottle mallakhamb. The sport promotes a strong and healthy body, as well as a composed mind and a stronger willpower. It also makes the body strong and light and benefits body parts such as the back, arms, stomach, thighs, and spinal cord.

Another similar sport to pole dancing is one that originates from China called "pole climbing." It is a traditional acrobatic sport in China that requires strength, balance, and skill. It is performed by climbing, stretching against, sliding down, and holding the pole. It is also characterized by combinations of flips and jumps and is performed with two or more poles by two or more performers.

Pole dancing has also been linked to gymnastics because it uses styles and techniques similar to gymnastic moves. Gymnastics is a sport that involves the presentation of exercises that showcase flexibility, physical strength, coordination, power, agility, and balance. The sport can also improve one's concentration skills and discipline, and can help build one's self-confidence. Gymnastics has evolved from exercises from circus performance skills and from skills for mounting and dismounting a horse from the ancient Greeks. It basically involves floor exercises and performances on balance beams, uneven bars, and vaults. Several types of acts are involved in this sport, such as trampolining, tumbling, acrobatics, aerobics, and rhythmic gymnastics. Rhythmic gymnastics uses a combination of elements such as those of dance, ballet, gymnastics, and apparatus manipulation. Moreover, it also involves routines that use balls, hoops, ribbons, clubs, and ropes. The best-known gymnastics sport is the competitive artistic gymnastics, which involves routines in women's events that require the use of balance beams, uneven bars, and vaults.
